Southern-Style Baked Beans (A Family Favorite for BBQs & Potlucks!)

Every now and then, there’s a recipe in my binder that I pull out, make for a gathering, and immediately wonder: Why don’t I make this more often? These Southern-Style Baked Beans are one of those recipes.
Sweet, tangy, smoky, and full of flavor — this dish is the ultimate BBQ side, the kind of thing people go back for seconds (and thirds!). Whether you’re hosting a family cookout, bringing a dish to a potluck, or cooking up something hearty for a holiday meal like the 4th of July, these baked beans absolutely deliver.
💛 Why This Recipe Is a Keeper
This recipe has been in my collection for years, tucked safely in my well-loved binder, and it never lets me down. When my son graduated, I doubled the recipe, baked it in two pans, and brought it to his celebration dinner. Let’s just say… there were no leftovers!
What makes it so special?
- Rich, homemade flavor with just the right balance of sweet and tangy
- Smoky bacon on top that crisps up beautifully in the oven
- Sauce that thickens perfectly with no need to babysit it on the stovetop
- Easy to double or triple for a crowd
This isn’t just a side dish — it’s the dish people remember from the meal.
🍴 Ingredients You’ll Need
For a single batch (serves about 18):
- 8 slices bacon, cut in half
- 1 medium onion, diced
- ½ green bell pepper, diced
- 3 (28 oz) cans pork & beans (use your favorite brand)
- ¾ cup barbecue sauce
- ½ cup brown sugar
- ¼ cup distilled white vinegar or apple cider vinegar
- 2 tsp dry mustard or 2 tbsp Dijon mustard
Note: I usually use Dijon because it gives a little tangy depth, but dry mustard works great too if that’s what you have on hand.
👩🍳 Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Preheat the Oven
Set your oven to 325°F. This lower temperature helps everything cook slowly and evenly, allowing the sauce to thicken up beautifully.
2. Cook the Bacon
In a large skillet, cook the bacon until it’s about halfway done — not crispy, but partially cooked. Remove the bacon and set aside.
Tip: Don’t overcook the bacon here! It will finish crisping in the oven, right on top of the beans.
3. Sauté the Veggies
Using the flavorful bacon drippings, sauté the diced onion and green pepper for about 5 minutes, until soft and fragrant. This step builds depth of flavor that you’ll taste in every bite.
4. Mix It All Together
Add the pork & beans, barbecue sauce, brown sugar, vinegar, and mustard to the pan. Stir everything well and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.
5. Transfer to the Baking Dish
Pour the mixture into a greased 9×13 baking dish. Lay the partially cooked bacon strips across the top — they’ll crisp up as the beans bake and add that smoky finish we love.
6. Bake It Slow & Low
Bake the beans uncovered for 2 hours, until the top is bubbling and the sauce has thickened. If you like your baked beans extra thick, let them go another 15–30 minutes.
Bonus tip: Let the beans rest for 10–15 minutes before serving. The sauce will continue to thicken as it cools slightly.
⏱ Time Breakdown
- Prep Time: 20 minutes
- Cook Time: 2 hours
- Total Time: 2 hours 20 minutes
👩👦👦 Perfect for a Crowd
I’ve doubled or even tripled this recipe for family reunions, church potlucks, and big backyard BBQs. Just divide the mixture between multiple pans for even baking. It scales beautifully and tastes just as delicious reheated the next day.
This dish truly shines when shared — but don’t be surprised if people ask you to bring it again (and again!).
📝 Recipe Tips & Customizations
- Use canned pork & beans for convenience, but feel free to use baked beans or homemade-style if that’s what you have.
- Add some heat with a dash of cayenne pepper or chopped jalapeños.
- Go smoky by using a hickory BBQ sauce or even smoked paprika.
- Vegetarian version? Skip the bacon and sauté your veggies in olive oil. Add a touch of liquid smoke for depth.
🍽 What to Serve With Southern Baked Beans
This side dish pairs well with just about any main course, especially at a cookout or holiday gathering. Some of our favorite pairings:
- BBQ chicken or ribs
- Grilled burgers or hot dogs
- Pulled pork sandwiches
- Fried chicken
- Cornbread or biscuits
- Fresh watermelon or coleslaw
It also works great as a hearty meatless lunch on its own with some crusty bread on the side.
