A quick and healthy meal packed with flavor

Weeknights can be busy and chaotic. By the time dinner rolls around, the last thing most of us want is a complicated recipe with a long list of ingredients. That’s why I love quick, flavorful meals like this Shrimp & Broccoli Stir Fry. It comes together in just 20 minutes, uses pantry-friendly Asian-inspired ingredients, and leaves you with a meal that’s high in protein, loaded with veggies, and naturally lower in carbs.

This recipe has become one of my go-to weeknight staples because it checks all the boxes: fast, healthy, and delicious. It also feels restaurant-quality without the cost of takeout, and it’s customizable for your family’s taste buds.

Why You’ll Love This Shrimp & Broccoli Stir Fry

  • Quick & Easy: Dinner on the table in 20 minutes.
  • Healthy & Balanced: High-protein shrimp, fiber-rich broccoli, and a flavorful sauce that ties it all together.
  • Low Carb Option: Naturally lighter than most takeout stir fries—great for anyone watching carbs.
  • Budget-Friendly: A large bag of shrimp and broccoli florets makes multiple meals without breaking the bank.
  • Customizable: Add spice, swap veggies, or serve over rice or noodles depending on your family’s preferences.

Ingredients Breakdown

Shrimp – The star protein. I like using raw, peeled, and deveined shrimp for convenience. They cook quickly, which makes them perfect for stir fry.

Broccoli Florets – Crisp-tender and full of nutrients, broccoli adds bulk and balance to the dish.

Olive Oil – For sautéing the shrimp and broccoli. You can also use avocado oil or vegetable oil.

Sesame Seeds & Green Onions – Garnishes that add flavor and a restaurant-style finish.

The Sauce – A simple mix of soy sauce, oyster sauce, rice wine vinegar, brown sugar, ginger, garlic, sesame oil, and cornstarch for thickening. Optional sriracha gives it a kick. It’s sweet, savory, slightly tangy, and so satisfying.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Cook the Shrimp – Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the shrimp and cook for 2–3 minutes until pink. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  2. Add the Broccoli – Toss in broccoli florets and stir-fry for another 2–3 minutes until tender but still crisp.
  3. Make the Sauce – While the shrimp is cooking, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, rice wine vinegar, brown sugar, ginger, garlic, sesame oil, and cornstarch. Add sriracha if you like spice.
  4. Bring it Together – Pour the sauce into the skillet with the broccoli. Stir until thickened, about 1–2 minutes. Add the shrimp back in and toss until coated.
  5. Garnish & Serve – Sprinkle with sesame seeds and sliced green onions. Serve immediately.

Variations

  • Spicy Shrimp Stir Fry: Add more sriracha or a sprinkle of red pepper flakes.
  • Different Veggies: Swap broccoli for snap peas, bell peppers, mushrooms, or zucchini.
  • Protein Swap: Try chicken, beef, or even tofu instead of shrimp.
  • Meal Prep Friendly: Cook and store in airtight containers for up to 3 days.

What to Serve With Shrimp & Broccoli Stir Fry

  • White rice, jasmine rice, or brown rice
  • Cauliflower rice for a low-carb option
  • Lo mein or rice noodles for a takeout-style meal
  • Quinoa for a protein-packed base

Tips for Success

  • Don’t Overcook the Shrimp: They only need a couple of minutes per side. Overcooked shrimp turn rubbery.
  • Make the Sauce While Cooking: It saves time and keeps the recipe under 20 minutes.
  • Keep Veggies Crisp: Don’t cook the broccoli too long—it should be bright green and tender-crisp.
  • Adjust to Taste: Add more soy sauce for saltiness, more sugar for sweetness, or more vinegar for tang.

Why This Recipe Works

This meal comes together so quickly because shrimp and broccoli are both fast-cooking ingredients. Instead of multiple pots and pans, everything cooks in one skillet. The sauce is what ties it together—salty, sweet, garlicky, and just a little spicy if you add the sriracha. It’s the kind of recipe you’ll make again and again because it’s reliable, family-friendly, and customizable.

For me, this is the type of recipe that saves the day when I’ve had a long day teaching and don’t want to spend an hour in the kitchen. With just a few pantry staples and freezer-friendly shrimp, dinner is ready in a flash.
